Everyday Advocacy — Standing for Others, Even When It Doesn’t Affect You

At Intuitive Consulting Agency, one of our core values is inclusion. But inclusion is not simply about who sits at the table—it’s about who we show up for, even when their struggles do not mirror our own. As we move through June—a month that often centers visibility, liberation, and justice—we are reminded that true advocacy means caring beyond convenience, beyond self, and beyond familiarity.

The great James Baldwin once wrote,

“If I love you, I have to make you conscious of what you don’t see.”

Baldwin’s words are a powerful reminder that love, justice, and advocacy are not passive acts. They require us to widen our perspective, to open our hearts to the experiences of others, and to lean into the discomfort of addressing issues that may not directly impact our daily lives. In our schools, communities, and systems, inequities exist that may not always touch us personally, but they still demand our attention.

The Work of Everyday Advocates

Everyday advocacy doesn’t require a title, a podium, or an official role. It requires intention. It means:

Speaking up when you witness discrimination, even if you are not the target.

Learning about policies that harm marginalized communities, even when you benefit from them.

Listening to lived experiences that differ from your own, with humility rather than defensiveness.

Using your influence — however big or small — to elevate voices that are often silenced.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so powerfully stated:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

When we practice everyday advocacy, we are affirming our shared humanity. We are acknowledging that the liberation of one is bound to the liberation of all. In educational spaces — which are central to the work we do at Intuitive Consulting Agency — this means advocating for students across race, ability, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and mental health needs.

The Inclusive Heart of Intuitive Consulting Agency

At Intuitive Consulting Agency, our commitment to inclusion isn’t performative — it’s foundational. We believe that:

Every student deserves a culturally responsive and emotionally safe learning environment.

Every educator deserves training that equips them to serve all children with excellence.

Every policy must be examined through the lens of equity and justice.

As Black feminist scholar Audre Lorde once said,

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”

This interconnectedness fuels our work. We recognize that being an inclusive advocate means staying present for the struggles that don't mirror our own, because the health of our collective community depends on it.

Call to Action: Start Where You Are

You don’t have to wait for a major movement to begin practicing everyday advocacy. Start where you are:

In your staff meetings, ask whose perspectives are missing.

In your classrooms, evaluate whose histories are being taught.

In your conversations, challenge stereotypes and misinformation.

In your networks, create space for marginalized voices.

As we close this month, we encourage you to embody the spirit of everyday advocacy. Care about the issues that may not knock on your door — because one day, they might. And even if they never do, your care still matters.

Together, we can build inclusive spaces that reflect the fullness of every person’s humanity — not because we have to, but because we choose to.
